TRACERS IS NOT FREEWARE! If you use it, and like it, please send a
shareware contribution of $10 - $15 (Cdn $ or US$) to the address given
below. The registration entitles you to the arena editor (currently
under development) and possibly a one-to-three player version.

Welcome to Tracers!
The year is 2091. The public, having grown bored with the usual fare,
has created a demand for high-tech and deadly sports where the contestants
have more to lose than just their standing in a league, and winning means
living as well as handsome financial gain. Recent advances in Coherent
Light technology have made possible the sport of Tracing.
THE GRID
--------
Each match takes place on a game grid. The game grid is composed of the
grid floor, the walls, and in some cases, obstacles. The entire grid floor
is energized, however, power concentrations lie along the grid lines
themselves, therefore the Tracer who can keep his Tracike along the grid
lines has a decided speed advantage over his opponent. In addition, a
Tracike on a grid line steals power from the rest of the grid, slowing his
opponent further.
THE TRACIKES
------------
The Tracikes are quite probably man's greatest triumph in ground-based
vehicular technology. Combining lightning speed and incredible
maneoverability in a small titanium-alloy shell, the Tracike is similar
in appearance to the motorcycle of old. Unfortunately, one side-effect
of the design is that the Tracikes have no on-board power supply.
Instead, they are equipped with a super-conducting transformer that draws
power from the game grid through the super-cooled front wheel and converts
it into a form usable by the cike's drive system. This system of propulsion,
while highly efficient, makes the front wheel explosively sensitive to
collision (ie. walls and obstacles) or heat (ie. a trace).
A Trace is the name given to the deadly wall of intense, coherent light
thrown up behind each Tracer's cike. The trace is extremely hot, and thus
deadly if hit by the front wheel of any Tracer's cike.
The cikes are extremely maneouverable, however, in order to stimulate
interesting competition, two limitations are placed on the cikes:
1) Each cike can only turn at right angles. The turns are made by pivoting
on the front wheel, accounting for its extreme width.
2) Once a match has started, a cike cannot stop. The only method of speed
control is by riding or not riding grid lines.
SCORING
-------
Points are awarded according to time. The longer it takes to kill your
opponent, the less points you are awarded. The time limit is 90 seconds,
after which you SUBTRACT from your score if your opponent dies before you.
This system makes for some interesting strategies. Each area match is
composed of 5 legs, winning an arena is based on winning the most legs.
Whoever wins the most arenas wins the tournament.
CONTROLS
--------
The controls are simple:
Red Warrior - Left hand side Green Warrior - Right hand side
Numeric Keypad
w - up 8 - up
s - down p = pause 5 - down
a - left 4 - left
d - right 6 - right
+++++ WARNING: CAPS LOCK MUST BE OFF FOR CONTROLS TO FUNCTION!++++
(I could have fixed this, but its not crucial and I wanted to
release the game.)
LOADING INSTRUCTIONS & TECHNICAL DETAILS
----------------------------------------
To play Tracers, simply boot up with workbench, insert the tracer disk
and double-click the Tracers icon. Screen blankers and mouse accelerators
such as Pyro and Mach II should be disabled as they tend to cause
problems.
TRACERS was written using hybrid code composed of AMOS and C. AMOS
from Mandarin (now Europress) Software is truly an amazing language,
and I'm sure I could have written the whole thing in AMOS alone, but I
didn't have time to get very proficient with its 500+ commands.
I've written versions of this game on almost every personal computer
except the Mac, these include the Atari 800, Commodore 64, TRS-80 Color
Computer, and IBM PC. Without color, a Mac version just seemed like a
waste of time. I'm most proud of the Amiga version, this wonderful machine
allowed me to incorporate every feature I wanted with little effort.
APPEAL
------
This is the first program I've released on the public domain, as a
university student, I sacrificed many hours of study time (and had many
fights with my girlfriend), in order to write this litte gem. If you
could find it in your hearts and wallets, a little compensation would be
appreciated. A small financial return on this project would encourage me
to write further updates (which you'd get free if you donated). Please
feel free to tell me what you think of the game, and ideas for further
improvement.
Enjoy the game, Warriors, and remember:
NEVER BLINK WHEN YOUR ON A GRID LINE!!!
Adrian.
